🩺 How Long Does It Really Take to Start a Medical Role in Australia?
One of the most common questions we get asked by doctors both local and international is: “How long will it take from the interview to actually starting the job?” The answer depends on a few factors but here’s a general guide to what the process looks like:
🔹 Interview to Job Offer, usually 1–4 weeks. Some health services move quickly, others a little slower depending on their internal process.
🔹 Offer to Paperwork Finalised, give it 2–4 weeks for contracts, credentialing, references, and compliance checks to be sorted.
🔹 Registration & Medicare Provider Number
If you're already AHPRA registered, this is fairly straightforward and can be done within 2–4 weeks.
For international doctors (IMGs), it’s a longer process. Depending on your pathway, it can take 2–3 months or more to get registration approved.
🔹 Visa Processing (if needed) – This varies based on visa type, but allow 4–8 weeks. Some move quicker, others take a bit more time.
🔹 Start Date – Once all of the above is in place, your employer will confirm your start date.
🕒 Rough timelines:
Local doctors (already in Australia): around 4–8 weeks from interview to starting
Overseas doctors (IMGs): typically 3–6 months, depending on your situation but can take anywhere between 3-12months from application to your first day in the hospital.
📅 When Are Most Jobs Advertised?
Hospital roles tend to be advertised between July and October, ahead of the new hospital year starting in February.
General practice and private clinic roles are more flexible and are recruited for year-round, especially in regional and rural areas where demand is consistent.
🧾 Our advice? Start early particularly if you’re applying from overseas. The earlier you begin gathering your documents and working through the process, the smoother things go.
